1. Change the air filter. According to American Lung Association maintenance is key when it comes to air filters, though many homeowners disregard the importance of this type of maintenance. If you can’t remember the last time the filter was changed…then it’s well past time to replace it.  Changing any air filter seems like a good idea, but will it clean the air? Not really.

Most air filters are designed to protect the furnace from large contaminates. These buildup on the firebox stinking the air up when you first fire the furnace up in the winter. They also buildup in the motor and blower assembly causing the motor to run hot and the blower to not move as much air as it should. These directly increase the cost of the heating and cooling your home as well as shortening the lifespan of your furnace. They also buildup on your evaporator coil during the summer air conditioning months and end up forming a kind or primordial ooze that is a near perfect breeding ground for those ‘things” that can harm your lungs and affect your allergies. During the heating system, these “things” that are stuck to the evaporator coil and rest in the evaporator coil pan are cooked by the superheated air and made airborne. Perfect for getting stuck in your final air filter, your lungs.

Filters simply are not good enough. You need air purification.

2. Have your entire HVAC system inspected every year, twice if you have air conditioning, and, if necessary, cleaned. Multiple components of your HVAC system, including the ductwork, can trap contaminants and contribute to poor indoor air quality if not kept in proper working order. According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), if there is visible dust, dirt or debris within the ductwork, your HVAC system should be cleaned. Dirt is the enemy. A clean system feels better, costs less to operate, is healthier and lasts longer.

3. Hire a professional. Not all duct cleaning companies can or should be trusted. An HVAC system cleaning that is not done correctly can actually make a home’s indoor air quality worse. This is why the furnace and evaporator coil need to be taken apart and really cleaned. That is not a job for a carpet cleaning companies that pretends to perform duct cleaning. Watch out for the duct cleaning swindles. If someone sends you a flier advertising duct cleaning for under a couple of hundred dollars, say $139, you can be assured that you are going to get scammed. The process of duct cleaning will take a couple of people 3 to 4 hours to perform in most cases. A $40,000 truck equipped with $15,000 worth of tools and 2 skilled technicians cannot perform a duct cleaning for only $139. More likely than not the $139 company will hook their machine up to the front of the furnace or the return air register and suck the air backwards and in 15 to 20 minutes will call it a day. Worthless. The other thing that I have seen them do is start selling a whole lot filters. Filters for the return air register and filters for the supply air register. Your system cannot pull the proper amount of air through multiple registers. Supply air, the vents in each room, are never to be equipped with filters.
